Addiction Counseling & Therapy at Black Bear Lodge
Detox and residential treatment can help stabilize the body and create distance from active substance use. However, treating just the physical symptoms of substance use disorder isn’t always enough — it’s important to treat the root emotional causes, too.
For many, this means exploring trauma, stress, grief, relationships or untreated mental health concerns. For others, it means learning new coping skills, improving communication or developing a stronger foundation for long-term recovery.
Every patient who comes to Black Bear Lodge works with licensed clinicians through an individualized treatment plan built around their history, needs and recovery goals.
Where Counseling Happens Matters
Most addiction counseling happens in an office. At Black Bear Lodge it happens on a forested campus in the north Georgia mountains, in private individual sessions, clinician-led group therapy and experiential programming that use the mountain environment as a deliberate part of the therapeutic model.
The setting is not incidental. Distance from the triggers, people and patterns of active addiction creates space, and that space is one of the most undervalued components of effective counseling.
Individual Therapy
One-on-one counseling is a core component of the Black Bear Lodge treatment program. Each patient works with licensed clinicians in private individual therapy sessions built around their specific history and goals.
Individual therapy at Black Bear Lodge addresses the root causes of addiction, co-occurring mental health conditions, trauma history, patterns of thinking and behavior and long-term relapse prevention. Your therapist works with you throughout your stay as part of your broader treatment team.
Group Therapy
Many patients find that hearing other experiences and perspectives helps reduce feelings of isolation while building connection and support throughout treatment.
Group therapy is a core clinical component of the Black Bear Lodge program, bringing patients together in a structured therapeutic setting facilitated by a licensed clinician.
Topics covered in group therapy include understanding addiction, identifying and managing triggers, emotional regulation, communication and relationships and relapse prevention.
Dual Diagnosis Treatment
Many people seeking treatment are also living with co-occurring mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD or bipolar disorder.
Black Bear Lodge specializes in dual diagnosis treatment, the integrated treatment of addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders within a single treatment plan. If you have struggled with mental health challenges alongside addiction, whether diagnosed or not, Black Bear Lodge is equipped to address the full picture.
Trauma-Informed Approach
Trauma and addiction are deeply connected. Many people in recovery carry histories of abuse, loss, violence or adverse experiences that contributed to their substance use.
At Black Bear Lodge, counseling and therapy are delivered through a trauma-informed lens that recognizes the ways trauma can influence the recovery process. For people with significant trauma histories, trauma-informed approaches are integrated into the individualized treatment plan as part of the same clinical picture.
Experiential Therapy
At Black Bear Lodge, experiential therapy is woven into the clinical program through activity, challenge and the natural environment to support the counseling work happening in individual and group sessions.
Experiential Therapy at Black Bear Lodge may Include
Adventure Therapy
Outdoor experiences and recreational activities are incorporated into experiential programming and connected back to the therapeutic work taking place throughout treatment.
Art Therapy
Creative expression can serve as a clinical tool for processing emotions, trauma and the experience of recovery, particularly for those who struggle to access insight through conversation alone.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT uses mindfulness-based approaches to help build psychological flexibility and identify values that support long-term recovery.
Evidence-Based Therapy Modalities
Black Bear Lodge integrates evidence-based therapeutic modalities into individualized treatment plans. Not every approach is right for every patient, and treatment plans are built around clinical recommendations and personal history.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT helps identify and restructure patterns of thinking that contribute to substance use and addictive behaviors.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
DBT builds skills in emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness and interpersonal effectiveness.
Motivational Interviewing
Motivational Interviewing is a collaborative counseling approach that helps strengthen motivation and commitment to change.
Couples & Family Therapy
Addiction affects spouses, partners and family members as well as the person receiving treatment. Family involvement can play an important role in supporting recovery and rebuilding relationships.
The Black Bear Lodge Family Program
Substance use disorders affect families as well as the person receiving treatment. Black Bear Lodge offers a dedicated family program available to loved ones of patients participating in treatment.
The rotating curriculum covers topics including addiction education, medication-assisted treatment, codependency and boundaries, aftercare planning and ongoing family support.
Family participation can play an important role in supporting long-term recovery and helping loved ones better understand the recovery process.
No Two Plans The Same
Every patient who comes to Black Bear Lodge receives an individualized treatment plan built around their substance use history, mental health needs, trauma history and recovery goals.
Treatment plans are developed collaboratively with the clinical team and reviewed regularly throughout treatment. As people progress through treatment, plans are adjusted based on clinical recommendations, progress and ongoing recovery goals.
